Young Jazz Fan
One of the cool elements of jazz Thursdays at Hendershot's is that the music starts at 8 pm or thereabouts, not nine or ten or eleven or later. So the older set (yours truly) and the younger set can make the scene.

You may remember these guys from the Latin ensemble One Ton Tomato. Now they're two-thirds of "The Odd Trio." The third third is another OTT alum, sax guru Marc Gilley. The trio played Hendershot's this evening, having returned from a successful trip north to perform in Cincinnati's Midpoint Music Festival.
Marc Gilley (foreground) and Todd Mueller are two-thirds of the Odd Trio. Marc and Todd, along with guitarist/composer Brian Smith, brought their genre-bending virtuosity to Hendershot's this evening, serving up everything from hard rock licks to funk to jazz to blues to quasi-classical improvisational lines.
Back in April, I wrote about an upcoming Farm 255 gig by Jason Ajemian and the High Life: "Some jazz artists revel in the conventional, inviting their audiences to share once again the familiar delights of the melodies and harmonies of the American Songbook. Other jazz artists chafe at the constraints of melodic and harmonic convention, itching to step into the street, metaphorically, and knock people’s hats off, carrying audiences far from shore to experience the exotic beauty that lies near the boundary between structure and noise. Here in Athens, Dan Nettles and his Kenosha Kid jazz collective tend toward this restlessness of musical spirit, and Dan is recommending that we join him to hear from some other explorers of far musical seas, Jason Ajemian and the High Life."
Next Wednesday, October 6, the ensemble will return to Athens for two performances at Farm 255: 9 pm and 11 pm.
It's been awhile since jazz at the Highwire popped up on our radar. Let's hope this signals a resurgence in live jazz at the cozy venue.
The Odd Trio (Marc Gilley on sax, Brian Smith on bass guitar, Todd Mueller on drums) flew the flag for Athens up in Cincinnati this past week at the Midpoint Music Festival. Here's the combo playing "Accidental Cool" at the Courtyard Cafe.
